Community
Community

We build on the agroecosystem knowledge of rural communities to identify changing climatic patterns and optimize agroforestry planting efforts.

Biodiversity
Biodiversity

Enrichment of the Miombo tropical dry forest is critical for global biodiversity and for the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.

Carbon
Carbon

Miombo carbon storage in the project areas forms the basis for long-term socioenvironmental reinvestments.

Miombo soil and fire management
Facilitate Miombo enrichment in community-identified areas through a combined strategy of soil and fire management and enrichment planting of Miombo species.

Sustainable food production
Generate alternative income opportunities for households by establishing agroforestry lots with a combination of commercially viable fruit, nut, herbal, and other trees.

Planting indigenous and naturalized trees
Planting of Miombo species and naturalized fruit species sourced from local nurseries.

Project type

Plan Vivo 5.0 Project

Project area

This project will enrich 400 ha of Miombo woodlands in and around Chibabava, Mozambique. It will also establish agroforestry nurseries and plots for growing horticultural and fruit species. The project aims for continuous and organic growth, by including more community lands over time.

Main activities

The project uses a landscape approach for enrichment of Miombo woodlands and the creation of climate resilient agroecosystems. We build firebreaks, nurseries, agroforestry plots, apply mulching, enrichment planting and support livelihood diversification with non-timber forest production.

Plan Vivo stage

The project started in May 2022 with baseline measurements and the first nursery activities. The PIN was approved and we expect Plan Vivo certification in January 2024.
