Fes Enying – Access to safe drinking water in Bankim has long been a critical issue, with many water points found faulty or irreparable. With support from Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen, the restoration of the Nguinklo water point has significantly improved water access and sustainability for local residents.

The challenge of safe drinking water is a pressing concern in Bankim, one of the communes within the Fes Enying project’s operational area. A 2015 analysis revealed a stark reality: out of 153 water points, a significant 44 were faulty, with 22 deemed irreparable. Subsequent Plan Vivo mapping underscored that this critical situation persisted, prompting communities within the Fes Enying project to prioritize improving water access as a key future investment.

Thanks to the financial support from ‘Provincie Oost-Vlaanderen’, the project was able to successfully restore the Nguinklo water point, a water access improvement for this neighborhood in central Bankim. No longer do residents face a perilous descent to fetch water; access to this vital resource is now conveniently located beside the road, easily accessible for all. A resident next to the water point manages the water collection timetable, ensuring efficient access. A robust pump, powered by newly installed solar panels, now brings water to the surface. The addition of solar panels makes the system not only sustainable, but also less dependent on fluctuating energy prices.

This project went beyond merely restoring a water point; it also created a separate, renewed washing area for women, ensuring that drinking water taps and washing facilities are distinct. The construction itself was also embedded in community engagement and ownership, with local youth, led by their president Wan Romeo Magloire, actively contributing their efforts to the construction site.

This project offers a modest but meaningful step toward improving access to safe water in the community.
